John and Anna (Carlson) Nutter

John and Anna Nutter

John Nutter, son of William and Dinah (Ingham) Nutter, was born in Gloucester City, New Jersey, on March 6, 1856. John attended public schools. When twenty-one years of age he began farming on his own account and in 1878 he leased a tract of school land, which he eventually purchased. In the same year he took up a homestead in Platte township, on which he lived for five years.

Anna Carlson, daughter of Carl and Marta (Nilsdotter) Carlson, was born in Johannesborg, Mörlunda Parish, Kalmar Län, Småland, Sweden, on August 5, 1862.

John married Anna on May 2, 1881. They initially lived on his homestead in Platte township. However, after having "proved up" on his homestead claim, he moved his family back to his original farm, located between Gibbon and Shelton, Nebraska.

In addition to farming, from 1892 to 1896 John served as sheriff of Buffalo County. He was also prominent in local fraternal circles, belonging to Gibbon Lodge, No. 37, I. O. O. F.; Granite Lodge, No. 189, A. F. & A. M.; Kearney Chapter, R. A. M.; Excalibur Lodge, No. 138, K. P.; and to the local organization of the Ancient Order of United Workmen and the Knights of the Maccabees.

(Some obituaries for Nutters in the Gibbon area were sent to me by Steve Baker, great grandson of John and Jenny Nutter. Though I don't have enough information on these people to warrant individual webpages for them, I have provided this link to them here in the hope that others may be able to provide more information on them and their families.)
