John Nutter, son of William and Dinah (Ingham) Nutter, was born in Gloucester City, New Jersey, on March 6, 1856.
John married Anna Carlson on May 2, 1881. John and Anna had 5 children. Anna died young of an abdominal infection on March 22, 1893 at age 30, and was buried in Riverside Cemetary, in Gibbon.
In December of that year, John remarried, to Jennie Reinholdson. Jennie, the daughter of Olof Reinholdson (1847 - 1932) and Britta Jansdotter (1849 - 1871), was born in Öst Furtan, Värmland, Sweden, on March 27, 1871.
At the time they were marrried, John was serving as Sheriff of Buffalo County, and was living above the jail in the Sheriff's quarters, adjacent to the Buffalo County Courthouse in Kearney, Nebraska. Jennie probably moved in with him since their first child was born there. Upon completion of his term as Sheriff, they lived on John's farm, between Gibbon and Shelton, Nebraska, where the rest of their children were born.
John died of a stroke on December 10, 1935 at age 79, and was buried in the Riverside Cemetery. Jennie lived a long life, to age 99, finally dying of pneumonia at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney on November 2, 1970. She was also buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Gibbon.
John and Jennie had six children:
| Inez Virginia Nutter | Born October 19, 1984 in Kearney, Nebraska. In 1914, Inez married Maynard Everette Reynolds and they had three children. Inez died in a car accident at age 74 in Decatur, Illinois. |
| Hilda Margarite Nutter | Born October 15, 1895, at the family farm home in Shelton, Nebraska. In 1920, Hilda married Charles Hooker Layman and they had three children. She died of heart failure at age 79 in Hall, Nebraska. |
| Marjorie Isabel Nutter | Born May 8, 1898, at the family farm home in Shelton, Nebraska. Marjorie was never married, and died of a hemorrhage in Boulder, Colorado at age 91. |
| Harold Kenneth Nutter | Born November 21, 1903, at the family farm home in Shelton, Nebraska. In 1923, Harold married Josephine Marie Scott, and they had 3 children. |
| Donald Oakley "Don" Nutter | Born February 13, 1912, at the family farm home in Shelton, Nebraska. In 1970, Donald married Margaret Estella Mohn, and they had one daughter. Don died of a heart attack at age 68 at his Gibbon Island farm. |
| Jean Helen Nutter | Born February 14, 1915, at the family farm home in Shelton, Nebraska. In 1942 Jean married Yale Roy Nelson, and they had four children. They are currently living in Denver, Colorado. |
